The foundation of the city is related to 1740 when the Commandor Vitus
Bering decided to set up a base in the Avacha bay. The expedition
aimed to cross the Pacific ocean to the unknown shores of the future
Russian America.
So, a new settlement appeared in the Avacha bay on the shores of the
haven of St.Apostles - St. Paul and St. Peter which were the names
of 2 ships participating in the famous Second Kamchatka expedition.
Since its foundation it turned into the capital of the whole peninsula
- Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-city. The Avacha bay was chosen as a base
for the Pacific expedition deliberately: all the seamen visiting it,
confirm that the Avacha bay is one of the fascinating and spacious
havens in the world. The 260-year history of Petropavlovsk experienced
ups and downs.
Since the first days of its foundation construction activities have
been carried out and even in 1741 Krasheninnikov S. wrote that Petropavlovsk
consisted of "decent houses with perfect exterior and a church
for the Kamchatka expedition participants". However, after the
1743 edict about the completion of the Second Kamchatka expedition
under the command of Vitus Bering Petropavlovsk was about to finish
its impetuous development and only thanks to its convenient location
- it was an intermediate base between Okhotsk (the famous ship construction
town) and the northern fishing Pacific regions Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky
didn't stop its existence.
Kamchatka area is unique and fascinating. This is the land of volcanoes
which are abundant here - extinct, active, constantly fuming.
