The Avacha volcano is one of the most active in Kamchatka.
It is always in operation, though its rhythm is not the same. For
263 years, beginning from 1737 there were 16 eruptions. Some of
its prehistoric eruptions had catastrophical nature. They caused
the destruction of the volcano cone and creation of the explosive
caldera. Later a new cone of Avacha was formed there. Its last strong
eruption took place in 1945 and continued 7 hours. About three hundred
million tons of slag were thrown out of the crater during such a
short period. The hight of the coating was 1-1,5 m. Later exactly
this slag was used for constructing of new districts of Petropavlovsk.
