The tourists show the greater interest for brown bear, one of
the biggest bear species in the world. Its population is approximately
10-20,000 species. Spring and autumn are traditional hunting seasons.
About 1,000 animals are harvested on the territories of the Kamchatskaya
Oblast and Koryak Autonomous Area annually.
The population of Eastern-Siberian moose, having come from the
north into the Penzhensky and Olyutorsky districts of Koryak Autonomous
Area in 1955-1959, grew up to 3,000 species in the 70-s. In 1977-1978
45 young animals were carried into the Milkovsky district by helicopters.
Favorable climatic conditions and abundance of food allowed them
to acclimatize successfully, to propagate and spread into the neighboring
areas. For 20 years their population has grown to 2700-2800 species.
The hunting season for moose lasts from Autumn to January.
The pride of any hunter is the trophy of snow ram. To prey it
one must have good physical strength, knowledge, and often-luck.
Kamchatka’s snow ram is classified into two types by foreigners:
Kamchatka’s Big Horn and Koryak Snow Sheep.
Sport hunting for snow ram starts form August and lasts till November.
The annual harvest is up to 150 species. Sport hunting for polar
wolf, lynx, and wolverine is less spread due to the small number
of their population and difficulties with the access to the hunting
areas.
Among the types of hunting for feathered game, the most fascinating
is the hunting for wood grouse. It is very rare and beautiful bird.
The hunting lasts only one week in May. Hunting for different species
of ducks, goose, snipes, and partridges is also available and popular
among Kamchatka’s hunters.
