Far
Eastern Federal Marine Reserve, founded in 1978, is only one true
marine reserve in Russia. The main purpose of the Marine Reserve is
Nature conservation, the Reserve also conducts research and educational
activities.
The Reserve is located in the richest - in terms of biodiversity -
area of the Sea of Japan, It consists of 11 islands, many rocks and
a vast water area. About 3.300 species of invertebrates and vertebrates,
terrestrial and water plants are represented here.
The Reserve's islands and small rocks are of special aesthetic, scientific
and historical value. The area of the largest of them, Bolshoi Pelis,
is 380 ha. Anyone can see rocks, sand beaches, sub-tropical forests,
steppe, swamps, freshwater creeks and lakes at the islands. There
are colonies of marine birds, rookeries of common seal, many species
of terrestrial plants. The surrounding waters are inhabited by the
richest marine fauna.
The ancient people lived here about six thousand years ago. There
are 35 Neolithic human settlements found on the islands and mainland
coast.
The climate is Monsoon.
Average temperature of the sea surface in January is -1.8° C, in August
- +20.5° C.
Average temperature of the warmest month (August): +21 ° C.
Average temperature of the coldest month (January): -11 ° C.
More
than 1.200 species of marine animals and plants are noted in the Marine
Reserve's waters. Among them, about 170 species of Fish, 300 species
of Crustaceans, more than 200 species of Mollusks and 30 species of
different Echinoderms. The most remarkable are sea-cucumber trepang
(so-called marine "ginseng"), two species of scallops, giant octopus,
Kamchatka king crab. Even some corals can be found here.
More than 1.500 species of terrestrial animals and plants live here:
about 1000 species of vascular plants, 360 species of birds, including
such unique ones as white-tailed eagle, Steller' sea eagle and black
vulture. Seal Phoca largha breeds on the Marine Reserve' islands
only. Siberian tiger and far eastern leopard are found in coastal
zone as well.
